Financial Help for Victims of Crime

CASA of St. Croix County offers assistance to help victims of crimes apply for Wisconsin Compensation Funds.

Covered Crimes

  • Homicide

  • Attempted Homicide

  • Injury by intoxicated use of a vehicle

  • Hit and Run

  • Assault/ Battery

  • Attempted Assault/ Battery

  • Child Physical Abuse

  • Child Sexual Abuse

  • Sexual Assault

  • Stalking

  • Robbery

Eligibility

  • An innocent victim who suffered injury from a crime as identified by law

  • A child or legal representative who has been killed as a result of a crime

  • A person who is injured while aiding a crime victim or helping a police officer

  • A person who suffers a reaction from the death of a family member or household member

  • A person injured in a car accident caused by an intoxicated driver

  • An adult who was a victim of a crime as a minor

  • A parent of a minor crime victim

  • Victim conduct must not have caused or contributed to the victim’s injury or death

  • The victim must not have committed a crime that lead to the injury or death.

Compensation

The State of Wisconsin pay for four years of eligible expenses from the date of the crime or up to $40,000 for out-of-pocket expenses that are not paid or payable by a private or group insurance plan, public fuds, or another source, including payments made by the offender.

  • Loss of support to a dependent of a crime victim who is killed

  • Reasonable replacement costs of clothing, bedding held as evidence - up to $300

  • Reasonable replacement value of property held as evidence and rendered unusable by crime lab testing - up to $200

  • reasonable replacement cost of a computer or phone held as evidence - up to $200

  • Reasonable and necessary cost of cleaning a crime scene - up to $1000

  • Cost of caregiver services

  • Mental health treatment and work loss for parents of a minor victim - $3,000

  • Travel Expenses for testifying

  • Restorative Justice

  • Reasonable housing adaptation for a protracted disability - up to $5,000

  • Window, door or lock replacement or repair

  • Short term in-home care

  • Shot term nursing-home care

  • Reasonable funeral expenses up to $5,000

  • Eligible expenses for adults victimized as a children - four years worth of expenses or up to $40,000

  • Emergency legal services

  • Personal advocacy services
